Represented Group
Shona stone sculptors - Zimbabwe

The works shown here are by a group of sculptors from Zimbabwe in the style known as Shona. They are represented by their agent Miguel here in the UK.
Using basic hand tools they carve, chip and polish from solid stone, then fire each one prior to waxing. this gives the stunning patina or lustre you see.
A signature proudly carved completes the work and each artist is authenticated by Miguel via a short biography which can be seen in the gallery.
Picasso is known to have been influenced by sculptors from the region and In an interview with Time, published in October 1984, he states, “Everything I need to know
about Africa is in these objects. Most of these artists have never seen Western art and draw inspiration from spiritual beliefs, folklore and daily events.”
